Course Structure

Proficiency in Medical Care (STCW 95 A-VI/4-2)

This five-day course is for seafarers designated to take charge of medical care on board ship and for those requiring certificates of competency. On completion students will have sufficient knowledge of medical stores and equipment on board to be able to achieve the learning outcomes which are:

Outcome 1: The learner understands how to participate in the coordinated provision of medical care to a person on board.

Outcome 2: The learner is able to assess and provide care to an ill person on board.

Outcome 3: The learner is able to assess and provide care to an injured casualty on board.

Officers applying for chief mates / master CoC for the first time must hold a Proficiency in Medical Care certificate not older than five years.

Prerequisites

Proof of prerequisites is required for inspection at course commencement

Aged 16 years and over.

A Proficiency in Medical First Aid On Board certificate, or a Proficiency in Medical Care On Board certificate or its update.

Approvals

MCA to STCW 95 A-VI/4-2

Assessment

Short answer question papers and assessment of competence in practical skills.

Teaching methods

A mixture of theory and practical sessions - students are required to undertake some study outside of classroom hours.
