Challenges Facing Green Crew in the Yachting Industry

Have you ever heard of a “greenie”? It’s not an environmentalist, but rather a newbie in the yachting industry. Green Crew are facing some big challenges when it comes to establishing themselves. Becoming a part of the yachting industry can be daunting. As a greenie, you want to be prepared for the challenges that come with working in such a competitive and fast-paced industry. From learning the ropes to getting along with your yacht crewmates, there are some key challenges that all newbies should know about before entering this world of luxury and adventure. Let’s take a look at what some of those challenges are and how they can be overcome.

Head to our FAQ sections to find out how you can join a yacht crew if you are a greenie!

Challenges for Green Crew in Yachting

The biggest challenge that greenie’s face is lack of experience. Yachting is a highly specialised field that requires years of training and knowledge. A greenie may have the necessary qualifications, but they might be lacking the real-world experience needed to navigate the waters safely and efficiently. This could lead to problems when working with more experienced crew, as well as problems when dealing with other yacht owners or suppliers. The solution here is to get started with some day work!

Greenie’s need to have a rounded understanding of the regulations and safety standards set by organisations like The Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA). These organisations set out rules and regulations that must be followed while operating on the water, and failure to adhere to these standards can result in hefty fines or even jail time. As such, it’s important for greenies to familiarise themselves with these rules before attempting any sort of operation on the open waters.

A third challenge for greenies is finding employment within the industry. Since most positions within yachting require years of experience, it can be difficult for greenies to find positions that suit their skills and experience level. Fortunately, there are still plenty of opportunities available (ON YOTSPOT!)  for those willing to put in the work; from Junior Steward(ess) to Deckhand positions, there are plenty of options available for those looking to break into the industry.

Getting Along With Your Crewmates

Working in close proximity with so many people from different backgrounds can be overwhelming at times, and it’s important to remember that everyone has different personalities and ways of doing things. To ensure that you get along with everyone onboard, practice respect, patience, empathy, kindness, and understanding towards your fellow crew members and always remember that teamwork makes the dream work!

Adapting Quickly

The yachting industry moves quickly; it’s not uncommon for plans or schedules to change from one day to the next without warning. As a newbie, trying to find your place aboard a superyacht can seem like an impossible task. However, if you focus on developing adaptability skills such as flexibility and problem-solving abilities then you will be better equipped for any curve balls thrown your way while out at sea!

The yachting industry has its own unique language. Learning it is one of the biggest challenges you’ll face as a newbie. The best way to learn this language is to spend time on the boat learning from experienced crew members who have already been through the process. Pay attention to their conversations, ask questions when you don’t understand something, and start to pick up on the specific terminology used in different departments.
