Landing a Job Dockwalking: The Essential Tips

If you’re looking to land a job in the yachting industry, dockwalking is one of the best ways to get your foot in the door. While the process can be as simple as walking the docks and introducing yourself to crew members, a little strategy goes a long way. Whether you’re a greenie or have some experience under your belt, here’s how to maximise your dockwalking efforts.

Timing is Everything

Knowing the right time to approach the boats is crucial to making a good impression. Crews on deck are busy, and their schedules don’t leave much time for distractions. Here are a few timing tips to help you succeed:

Morning Meetings:
Most deck crews start their day early, with morning meetings usually taking place around 7h50. The ideal window for introducing yourself is between 8h15 and 8h30 , once the meeting has wrapped up, and the team is actively working. Arriving slightly earlier can also be beneficial. You might catch a few crew members hanging out before their meeting starts, giving you a chance to strike up a conversation.

Avoid Break Times:
Respecting the crew’s downtime is important. Avoid dockwalking during these key breaks:

  • 10h00: Morning break.
  • 12h00 – 13h00: Lunch hour.
  • 15h00: On larger vessels (over 60m), there’s often an afternoon break around this time.

Walking the docks during these periods is less effective since many crew members won’t be around, and interrupting their breaks is unlikely to work in your favour.

Plan Your Approach

You don’t need to rush to every marina in the area all in one day. Dockwalking can be physically and mentally tiring, so it’s essential to pace yourself. Here are a few tips to make the process smoother:

  • Create a Strategy: Map out the marinas and areas you want to visit. Rather than bouncing between different spots, work through each area methodically, and take notes on the boats you’ve already approached.
  • Use Apps for Insight: Download apps like Marine Traffic to check whether a marina is busy before you head out. This way, you won’t waste time going to areas with fewer vessels.

Be Persistent but Respectful

Dockwalking is all about persistence, but you also want to be respectful of the crew’s time and space. If you don’t get an immediate job offer, don’t be discouraged! Building relationships and leaving a good impression is key. Always be polite, and don’t take up too much of the crew’s time if they seem busy.

Stay Positive and Ask for Help

Looking for a job in yachting can be daunting, but stay positive and keep pushing. Every “no” gets you closer to a “yes.” And remember, you’re not alone. We’re here to support you in your job search, so feel free to get in contact with your questions. Good luck, and see you on the docks!
