Yachtie Minds Matter: Navigating Mental Health in the High-Seas Industry
What inspired you to start Yachtie Minds Matter, and how does your background as a captain influence your passion for mental health awareness?
As a captain, I’ve seen firsthand the unique challenges faced by crew members—long hours, isolation, high-pressure environments, and the constant demand for perfection. It’s easy to overlook how this all affects our mental health because, in yachting, we’re often taught to put the job first and ourselves second, but as we see too often – this leads to even more problems.
Starting Yachtie Minds Matter was deeply personal for me. I wanted to create a space where yachties felt seen, heard, and supported. My own experiences with my mental health struggles, and now leading a crew, made me realize how critical it is to foster an environment where mental health is prioritized for EVERYONE.
Can you explain the mission and vision of Yachtie Minds Matter? What specific mental health challenges in the yachting industry are you aiming to address?
Our mission at Yachtie Minds Matter is to break the stigma surrounding mental health in the yachting industry. Our goal is to provide tangible support for ANYONE in the industry, crew or onshore support, in the form of funding for therapy or Mental Health First Aid courses.
We’re addressing challenges such as:
- Isolation: Being away from family and friends for extended periods.
- Burnout: Long, demanding schedules without adequate rest or downtime.
- Stigma: The pressure to appear “tough” or “resilient” and the fear of being judged for seeking help.
- Substance Abuse: An extremely prevalent issue in the industry due to the high-stress of the job.
- And more…
What kinds of programs or resources does your organisation provide to support mental health in the yachting community?
We’re proud to offer a variety of resources and programs designed specifically for yacht crew, including:
- Funding for therapy and mental health first aid courses (in connection with Seas the Mind), for ANYONE in the industry in need.
- Access to trained therapists and professionals who understand the unique stressors of life at sea.
- Workshops and Seminars: Covering topics like stress management, coping strategies, and creating a supportive onboard culture.
- Peer Support Networks: A safe space for yachties to connect, share experiences, and support one another.
- Educational Materials: Practical guides and tips for maintaining mental health, accessible on our website and through partner platforms.
How does your non-profit organisation plan to reach and connect with yachties around the world? Are there any specific campaigns or events planned?
We’re connecting every which way we can, from digital outreach on our website and social media to media campaigns and in-person mental health panels and seminars at the major boat shows and crew conferences. We are collaborating with influencers, marinas, crew houses, management companies, and others to spread the word and extend our reach, and we have an incredible team of volunteers spread across the world passing out flyers for Yachtie Minds Matter as they dockwalk.
For those who want to contribute financially, what are the best ways to donate or get involved with the charity?
Supporting Yachtie Minds Matter is easy, and every dollar makes a difference. You can visit our website online at yachtiemindsmatter.org to make a one-time or recurring donation or become a founding corporate sponsor. We also have a volunteer form, and you can take the Yachtie Minds Matter Mental Health Pledge on the site as well. And while financial support is always appreciated, we also appreciate it when you help us spread the word. Follow on social media, share our posts and help us keep the conversation about mental health in yachting going!
