In 2014 whilst working on the yachts, Steve Crawford (founder of www.yotspot.com) became increasingly frustrated by the lack of information regarding training courses and career paths within the yachting industry.

‘It bothered me’ he says. A quick search on Google generates a host of training providers, but not every school hits the top page in search results. Furthermore, booking onto courses I was often left disappointed when due to lack of numbers some providers would have to cancel the course last minute. This left me stuck with limited knowledge of who else might run the course and whether it fit into my busy schedule and limited leave time. Career path information was also an issue for me. With consistent changing regulations from the MCA and moving goal posts, I was never quite sure of what I needed to do next, which modules, courses etc. I decided enough was enough and we set about building a system within Yotspot to solve this problem for ever! 🙂

What have we created?

Every member that registers with us (11,000 + growing) has a unique crew profile which is individual to them. This includes their experience, but more importantly what qualifications and courses they have achieved to date.

Using this information and working closely with the industry guidelines, we have created routes to certifications (career paths) for each department, namely Deck, Interior, Galley and Engineering to show crew how far they have come along their career path and what they need to do next. This could be doing an ‘Advanced Fire Fighting’ course to progress with their Chief Mate
For training course providers this is a fantastic way of filling courses and more importantly a fantastic tool for crew to educate themselves and find the courses they need. Overall, the benefits to the yachting industry are huge.

How does it work exactly?

(1) Training providers register with us and list their courses. This is a free service and offers huge benefits to Yotspot, our crew and the training providers. 

(2) These courses appear on our homepage, in crews Route To Certifications and can be searched by visitors.

(3) Results generated will show you all training providers running that course. 

(4) The ‘Enquire Now’ button provides a quick and easy approach to contacting the provider in order to make a booking.
