Efficient Deckhand (EDH)

The Efficient Deck Hand course is run over a five day period, based in the classroom and onboard our training vessel MV Sea Trident.

The course includes theoretical and practical training in all elements of seamanship including:

Rope and wire handling

Anchors and mooring techniques

Opening and closing cargo hatches

Cargo gear and rigging

Gangway and pilot ladders

Watchkeeping and other duties

Both practical and classroom instruction is delivered at the Red Ensign training facility in Cowes.

Course Structure

Entry Requirements

From the 31 December 2013 EDH will be a requirement for the issue of an OOW (Yacht

less than 3000 GT) CoC. The EDH certificate covers good basic seamanship practice and

the Code of Safe Working Practice for the Merchant Navy.

Note: EDH will not be required for revalidation purposes.

3.2 The requirements for EDH have been amended to allow a more flexible approach for the

yacht, workboat and fishing industry. The following certification and experience will permit

entry on to an EDH course and examination.

a) MCA accepted Yachtmaster Offshore certificates and shorebased course;

b) Yacht rating with at least 6 months sea service and a steering certificate or NWR

certificate;

c) Fishing Class 2 CoC or the Seafish 5 day watchkeeping course for under 16.5m fishing

certificates;

d) BML Tier 1 level 2 certificates; or

e) Tug rating with at least 6 months sea time (which may be in categorised water) and a

steering certificate or a NWR certificate.

Note: before an EDH certificate can be issued a minimum of 6 month sea service in

vessels of more than 15m is required.

Accommodation is provided onboard the M/V Sea Trident, moored alongside Red Ensign Training in West Cowes.
