Course Structure
LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
- To reach the minimum standards of competence as set by S.L 234.17.?
- Competent to participate effectively in coordinated schemes of shipboard organisation and operations.
- Understanding of pilot ladders, means of access, cargo work, safety, seamanship techniques, and ropework.

- Bridge lookout duties
- Compass cards
- Alarm signals, musters and drills
- Fixed fire fighting systems
- Operation, precautions and dangers of releasing lifeboats

- Ropes and wire ropes
- Wire grips
- Stoppers for rope and wire rope
- Stages and bosuns; chair
- Pilot ladders, gangways and accommodation ladders

- Securing a deck for sea

- Anchoring
- Safe working practices on board
Useful Information
ENROLMENT STANDARDS:
- Must be at least 17 years of age.
- Hold a valid STCW Basic Safety Training Certificate as per section A-VI/1.2
- Possession of a navigational watch rating certificate after meeting the requirements of section A-II/4 of the STCW Code OR hold a steering certificate
- 12 months appropriate sea service in the deck department as stated in SL.234.17.
- Qualifying sea service shall be all periods of sea, on ships not less than 15 GT
