STCW A-VI/6 (6) Designated Security Duties course
Objectives
Those who successfully complete the 1 day course should be able to demonstrate sufficient knowledge to undertake the duties assigned under the SSP. This knowledge shall include, but is not limited to:
Knowledge of current security threats and patterns
Recognition and detection of weapons, dangerous substances and devices
Recognition, on a non-discriminatory basis, of characteristics and behavioural patterns of persons who are likely to threaten security
Techniques used to circumvent security measures
Crowd management and control techniques
Security related communications
Knowledge of emergency procedures and contingency plans
Operation of security equipment and systems; for example Long Range Acoustic devices, Electric fences, water monitors, and Ship Security Alerting Systems
Testing, calibration and at-sea maintenance of security equipment and systems
Inspection, control, and monitoring techniques
Methods of physical searches of persons, personal effects, baggage, cargo, and ship stores.
Learning Outcomes
The intended outcomes for security training at this level are that the student:
Understands how to maintain the conditions set out in a ship security plan
Understands how to recognise security risks and threats
Understands how to undertake regular security inspections of the ship
Understands the proper usage of security equipment and systems, if any
