There is not a RYA Shorebased or Theory course named ‘Yachtmaster’ or ‘Offshore Yachtmaster’. The Coastal Course is properly titled ‘Coastal Skipper and Yachtmaster Offshore‘ but we shall often refer to this as ‘Coastal’.
RYA Coastal Skipper is an advanced course covering Seamanship and Navigation. A Coastal Skipper should have the skills and knowledge needed to be in charge of a small yacht at Sea, by day or night, and to be able to use a range of navigation skills and to know the collision regulations.
Candidates should have completed the RYA Day Skipper Shorebased and Practical courses and preferably had other trips to Sea as well.
Coastal Skipper is a RYA course of two parts; first you should do the "Shorebased" part, and follow this with the Practical course. Upon completion of both, if you meet the other qualifying requirements, you may take the RYA Yachtmaster Coastal or Yachtmaster Offshore assessment examination. The Shorebased course is suitable for Motor Yachtsmen as well as those who prefer to go to Sea under sail.
