RYA Yachtmaster Cruising Instructor (YMCI) training four day course is the essential first step to qualifying to become a motor cruising instructor. To qualify for this four day course you must have already achieved a practical exam pass at RYA Yachtmaster Offshore and gained some experience to consolidate your knowledge. This course, just like the Yachtmaster exam pass you have achieved, will make demands on your knowledge base and practical skills. In order to satisfy our RYA Instructor/Examiner that you are able to competently deliver RYA training worldwide you will need to display a high standard of Yachtmaster capability.
Pre-Course Knowledge Check is now a requirement since January 2014 for all candidates for this course. The check is in two papers, one is Background Theory the other is about Teaching & Learning. This work will help you prepare for the course and give you the best chance of getting the best outcome.
RYA Yachtmaster Cruising Instructor qualifications enable the holder to teach courses in the RYA motor cruising practical scheme up to and including RYA Day Skipper Practical, RYA Helmsman course and RYA Start Motor Cruising. In reality this is the majority of training in the motor cruising scheme but limits you to teaching relative novices so that you can gain experience and expertise as an instructor. When you and your Training Centre Principal decide you are ready, you can attend a Yachtmaster Instructor (YMI) course where you may qualify to teach all practical motor cruising courses up to and including Yachtmaster Offshore Exam Prep, as well as the three navigation courses that support the scheme; RYA Essential Navigation & Seamanship, RYA Day Skipper theory & RYA Yachtmaster theory.
RYA Yachtmaster Cruising Instructor Syllabus covers detailed theory testing on IRPCS, buoyage and navigation techniques as well as providing the opportunity for you to prove your practical skills. Although our YM Instructor/Examiner will be assessing your YM skills he is also there to show you proven training techniques, methods of providing feedback and assist your development as an instructor. There will also be a classroom session on the Day Skipper syllabus, to help you develop a realistic training programme. This is a busy four days but ultimately satisfying, regardless of the result. Remember, we are not looking for the perfect instructor but the potential to develop in that direction.
RYA Yachtmaster Instructor Power (YMI)
Those wishing to complete RYA YMI training must do so directly under the training of the RYA who will provide their own instructors. This is the same for all Training Centres as the RYA rightly require direct access to anyone attempting to become a Yachtmaster Instructor to ensure the integrity of this worldwide brand. However, the RYA training often takes place on our training vessel and this close collaboration enables us to provide pre course training for anyone that feels they need to brush up skills prior to the YMI course. This is very much bespoke training, our recommendation is to call us and discuss your requirements with our Chief Instructor.
