The RNLI tell us that the most common reason for call outs is machinery failure. Many of these call outs would be avoided if more yachtsmen (sail and power alike) had a better understanding of how the engine works and how to carry out regular checks and routine maintenance.
This is a practical based RYA course covering the operation and maintenance of a marine diesel engine. It provides an awareness of the main systems of a marine diesel engine and teaches the ability to take simple measures to prevent mechanical breakdown at sea and rectify defects which do not require specialist support.
Course Structure
•Understand the basic theory and principles of the Diesel Engine including the fuel system, the cooling system, the air system, and the electrical system
•To carry out daily check lists on engines
•To complete basic preventative maintenance
•How to trouble shoot, identify and fix basic engine problems
•Winter lay up procedures
