This one-day "RYA First Aid" course is designed to provide a working knowledge of first aid for people on and around the water. It fulfils the requirements for professional skippers of small craft working within 60 miles of safe haven. The course is recommended by the MCA and HSE, and satisfies the requirements of some categories of commercial work afloat, including Boatmasters.
This course is a must for all who mess about on the water from the windsurfer, dinghy sailor, racing yacht skipper and crew to family cruisers both power and sail not forgetting PWC, powerboats and Inland waterways, At the successful completion of the course you will be issued with the RYA first aid certificate. This certificate is valid for 3 years from the time of issue and is a prerequisite for RYA on-water Instructors and those taking their Coastal Skipper or Yachtmaster Offshore Examination.
This course will teach you how to cope with medical emergencies from minor ailments to serious situations that require an immediate response.
The syllabus covers situations you are likely to encounter while on the water or at sea, with particular emphasis on resuscitation techniques, caring for a man overboard victim, Cold Water Shock, Hypothermia, Wounds and Bleeding, Fractures, Sea Sickness, Heart Attacks and Angina, Burns, Diabetic emergencies, Medical Shock and the use of the Class C First Aid Kit We also explain how to obtain outside medical assistance and what to expect when involved in a helicopter rescue scenario.
