RYA Inland Waterways Helmsman's Course

Come along to the beautiful Oulton Broad and take the R.Y.A Helmsman’s course on our own cruiser or your own boat if you prefer.

No previous experience needed, we can tailor a one or two day course to give you the experience and confidence in handling a motor cruiser on the rivers and Broads. The R.Y.A Helmsman’s certificate also qualifies you for an I.C.C that with a C.E.V.N.I written or interactive test will enable you to hire boats on European waterways.

Course Structure

•Nautical Phrases, ropes, anchoring (by-laws) mooring

•Boat handling

•Berthing, tides and river flow, bank interaction, man overboard

•Personal & boat safety

•Identification of risks , use of life jackets and buoyancy aids, fire equipment and gas appliances

•Engine care

•Routine engine checks and maintenance

•Bridges, locks

•Water level indicator post

•Collision avoidance

•Steering and sailing rules, by-laws and local regulations including traffic & sound signals, signs & priorities

•Care of the environment

•Avoiding damage to boats, flora and fauna
