RYA Powerboat Level 2

Powerboat level 2 is the equivalent to your driving licence but on the water. It is the minimum requirement needed should you choose to hire a boat or participate as a powerboat driver whilst diving, water skiing etc. No previous boating experience is required to join this course.

This is a two day intense and exciting course, where you will be taught to handle boats at high speed and perform manoeuvres that could save lives and get you out of trouble. With a location like we have here in Cornwall, Falmouth and the surrounding areas offer not just stunning scenery but a variety of excellent locations to refine your navigation skills on the water and even the opportunity to steer your way to a Cornish pasty

Boat Handling

• Starting and stopping
• Effects of current or tide
• High and low speed manoeuvring
• Propeller control
• Anchoring
• Man overboard
• Use of kill cord
• Steering controls, securing to a buoy
• Leaving and coming along side
• Being towed
• Basic knowledge of GPS

Theory and Background

• Types of craft and engines
• Weather
• Maintenance checks
• Emergency action
• IRPCS (International Regulations to Prevent Collision at Sea)
• Ropework
• Awareness of other water users
