Most electronic aids are useful but at best they only do what you can do yourself - albeit somewhat quicker! RADAR can do what no human being can do - IT CAN SEE IN FOG!!
Electronics are now commonplace on many boats and will become even more so in the near future. Position fixing systems, electronic plotters, depth indicators etc etc - all of these help us to get to our destination with a high degree of accuracy and to do so with safety.
GPS receivers are fairly straightforward to operate, and, even if you don’t take advantage of all the wonderful things that they can do, obtaining your position is usually simple. Radar, however, requires proper training in order to utilise its benefits to the full. Operating its controls is one thing but interpreting the picture is quite another and is not easy. There are many text books that can help but there is no substitute for expert tuition whilst on the water.
