The Short Range Certificate is the minimum qualification required by law to control the operation of VHF and VHF Digital Selective Calling (DSC) equipment on any British flagged vessel voluntarily fitted with a radio. This includes both fixed and hand held equipment using International channels.
What is in the course?
The course covers VHF communications, radio equipment, GMDSS operation and procedures and VHF procedures and regulations.
What do you need to know first?
The phonetic alphabet. (You can practice with car number plates). Also, an outline knowledge of radio procedures such as that in RYA Booklet G22 "VHF Radio inc GMDSS". Some other publications on the chandlers’ shelves cover similar material.VHF afloat by Sara Hopkins is recommended. It is helpful if you have read through before the course.
Is there an assessment or test?
There is a written test and a practical test on voice procedures, operation of a DSC controller and VHF Marine Band regulations in the GMDSS, with particular emphasis on distress and urgency procedures.
What will I need?
Notepaper and pencil, a passport photo and a cheque, or credit card, for £60 - payable to RYA for the Certificate. Book G31 is used for the course and is included in the course fee.
How long is the Course?
The Course is up to ten hours, starting at 08:45 and with short breaks for coffee and lunch. Food is available in the town but you may wish to bring a packed lunch.
How do I get the Certificate?
When you pass the Assessments the Certificate is administered and issued by the RYA. The actual Certificate is usually sent to you within 2 weeks of attending the course. A fast track service is available at extra cost.
Where?
The course is conducted at Sussex Yacht Club, at either the Shoreham or Southwick base. This will be confirmed with the joining instructions two weeks prior to course.
