Course Structure
Content & Objectives
The training, especially Personal Survival Techniques, can be very strenuous and involves jumping from a safe height (approx. 1.4m) – in Medina River, getting into and out of a life raft and righting an upturned life raft; and in the case of Fire Fighting, physically demanding, especially during some of the exercises involving live fires and the use of breathing apparatus we do need therefore, to ensure all our delegates are fit and well in order to be able to take part. Learners must be physically fit and will be required to complete and sign a confidential medical declaration informing us of any health problems that we would have to take into account. We reserve the right to carry out a risk assessment where an individual provides us with doubt of fitness to participate.
Elementary First Aid includes the DRABC of medical emergencies, CPR, recovery, bleeding and hypothermia.
Personal Safety and Social Responsibility includes dealing with emergency procedures, preservation of the marine environment, safe working practices, orders and their relation to shipboard duties, and human relationships on board ship.
Proficiency in Security Awareness includes an outline of the importance of ship security and the roles of those involved in its provision together with the requirements and measures to maintain ship security and how to recognise and report a security threat.
The Crisis Management & Human behaviour course enables candidates to become more aware of possible emergency and crisis situations that can occur on board passenger ships.
The Basic Safety Week including Crisis Management & Human behaviour training takes place over 6 days and is delivered through a combination of theory and hands-on exercises with focus on the practical elements of sea survival, fire fighting and first aid.
Sea survival theory sessions are taught in the dedicated Red Ensign classrooms. The course also comprises a supervised compulsory liferaft launch, inversion and entry as well as individual and group based swimming activities in a secured area in the river in front of our training premises.
Fire fighting uses real smoke, fire and breathing apparatus along with fire hoses and extinguishers in our purpose built fire fighting training facility. Candidates’ competence is assessed through their active participation during the practical session and with a test at the end of the module.
First Aid is a hand-on course including the use of resuscitation ‘Annies’ and other essential equipment.
PSSR and Proficiency in Security Awareness are based upon group discussion and experiential scenarios.
