The preparation for the RYA/Dot Yachtmaster Offshore Certificate exam can vary from 2 -4 days depending on previous skills. This is for the very experienced, the qualification being highly regarded worldwide.
Although the syllabus is the same as Yachtmaster Coastal a more comprehensive standard is required. A thorough shorebased knowledge including IRPCS, lights and shapes, sound signals and meteorology is essential. The instructor will assess your needs and structure the course accordingly, perfecting your skills. The minimum pre-course criteria, over the last 10 years, is 50 days on board, 2500 miles, 5 days as skipper, 5 passages over 60 miles (2 as skipper, 2 at night). You must also hold the VHF/SRC Operator's Licence and a current recognised First Aid Certificate. For commercial endorsement of this qualification you will need a Sea Survival Certificate and an RYA/DoT current medical.
After your preparation, an RYA examiner will come aboard on the final day to assess you. If successful you will be awarded the RYA/DoT Yachtmaster Offshore Certificate.
To take the practical exam, candidates must be aged 18 or over.
