Top tips for a job interview in the yachting industry

Interview Tips

  1. Do your homework and go into the interview prepared.
  2. Dress smart.
  3. Be interested.
  4. Prepare good questions to ask at the end (5-10 is a good indicator that you’re serious and you’ve done your homework).
  5. Don’t ask about 'money' or 'holiday' straight off the bat – ask the crew agent later or at second interview (if you get one).
  6. Don’t ask for more money straight away.
  7. Take notes.
  8. Go in with a can-do attitude (what I can do for you, not what can this boat do for me?).
  9. Be prepared for the “no time off for family functions” eventuality.
  10. Go in with the knowledge that the yacht is private or charter.
  11. Show you are career minded and want to commit for the long term.
  12. Find out about the culture of the department you will be joining.
  13. Ask about the role’s longevity in the department.
  14. Suggest you’d be available for day work or a trial to show your work ethic and capability.
  15. Be honest, friendly, positive and put your best foot forward.

Good luck!
