FAQ

What is the hierarchy of a yacht?

The hierarchy of a yacht is typically the same regardless of vessel size. The only major difference will be the size of the crew and structure of the various departments.

As a general rule, a superyacht typically has 5 main departments.

- Deck - the Chief Mate will head up this department!

- Engineering - the Chief Engineer will head up this department!

- Interior - the Chief Steward/ess will head up this department!

- Galley - the Executive Chef will head up this department!

- Specialist - Spa Manager, Divemaster might be an example here.

All departments will report to the Captain who is ultimately responsible for the entire yacht and the safety of its occupants.

  1. Captain: The captain is the highest-ranking crew member on the yacht and is responsible for the overall operation and safety of the vessel. The captain reports directly to the owner or the owner's representative and has final authority on all matters concerning the yacht.

The Captain will be in charge of the safe navigation and operation of the yacht. Has full responsibility for the vessel. All department heads will report to him. Answerable to the owner, management company. Liases with the owner and must meet expectations at all times. In general, has final say on hiring and firing of crew members. Project manages shipyard projects. Budgets and accounting issues.

  1. Chief Engineer: The chief engineer is responsible for the maintenance and operation of the yacht's engines, generators, and other technical systems. They report to the captain and may have a team of engineers and technicians working under them.

  2. First Mate: The first mate is second-in-command to the captain and assists with the operation and navigation of the yacht. They may also be responsible for supervising the deck crew and ensuring that safety procedures are followed.

  3. Chief Steward: The chief steward is responsible for managing the interior of the yacht, including the guests' accommodations, meals, and entertainment. They may also oversee a team of stewards and housekeepers.

  4. Deck Crew: The deck crew is responsible for maintaining the exterior of the yacht, including the decks, hull, and superstructure. They may also assist with mooring, anchoring, and launching tenders.

In addition to these core positions, a super yacht may also have a chef, a diving instructor, a masseuse, and other specialized staff, depending on the needs and preferences of the owner and guests.
