Summary
This 80ft expedition boat is looking for a Captain for recently refit 80’ (24m) expedition boat (steel hulled 80’ explorer built in Norway to Ice Class
Requires: i. 100 ton or foreign equivalent, and ii. extensive experience running single screw, heavy steel vessels
Seeking Captain with a strong engineering background and affinity for systems to run a private program. Owner is a single male: no pets, no kids yet and owner is eager to help when needed/asked to help as he spent over a decade working on boats from Nantucket to Natal. Also happy to stop helping when asked.
The vessel went through an extensive and close to 3-year refit at Front Street Shipyard in Maine under the prior owners ending in 2019. She is a classic tried and true transoceanic vessel with relatively new systems. Less “catch up work” more “maintenance and preventative care”. Owner wishes to keep her at yacht finishes and commercial grade/strength, she is not a “white boat” and wants to make the most of time in Lauderdale outfitting her before they travel.
Programme includes:
- Spring through Mid-Summer: South Florida, Bahamas and Turks & Caicos
- Mid-Summer through end of October: Sag Harbor (Owner keeps a cottage in town) and islands east of Long Island.
- Nov through spring: Caribbean/Windward Islands, Puerto Rico and South Florida
- Owner would like to use time on the boat to disconnect, explore nature, exercise, eat and live healthier and explore atolls/banks/reefs/islands less visited.
Seeking a Candidate Who:
- Takes pride in their work.
- Organized, meticulous, mechanical.
- Has a good understanding of recreational and commercial marine electronics including but not limited to communications and electrical.
- Enjoys having owners on the boat and a clear itinerary vs. sitting at port.
- Would rather put the hours in, in the engine room vs entertaining large numbers of guests, booking marinas, babysitting green crew.
- Prefers time on the hook/remote/time in nature than waiting on the dock.
- Appreciates an owner who pays attention to sea state and won’t obligate them to put themselves or the vessel at risk to try to conform to holiday schedules.
- Enjoys non-motorized water sports: free diving/spearfishing, fishing, surfing, kiting.
- Understands that maintenance and responsibilities are for the entirety of the vessel: from engine room to exterior.
Benefits include:
- Split Health Insurance costs the first three months, then crew can decide to continue as such or join the yacht’s program
- Reimbursement of License/ticket Upgrades following 6 months of service
- Three weeks paid vacation first year
- Captain “Flex Days” accrued over longer periods of time without time off
This may be a good position for someone looking to broaden their resume from engineer to Captain. Or a captain who prefers dealing with machines than guests, charters or managing larger crews.
Owner recently purchased the boat and is now seeking crew.
Open to a couple as well, ideally stew cooks and is an athletic trainer/yogi.
The vessel is US flagged but private so just a b1/b2 is sufficient.
