Course Description: ECDIS #601
The ECDIS Course is approved by both the USCG and the MCA to comply with the IMO requirements to complete a 40 hour generic ECDIS course.
The 5 day EDCIS course is designed to enhance the safety of navigation by providing the knowledge and skills necessary to fully utilize ECDIS. The course incorporates the new MPT ECDIS equipment laboratory simulators. The ECDIS uses Transas software and meets IMO performance standards.
This course satisfies the following STCW Code as amended, including the 2010 amendments, training requirements

Pre-requisites:
Prior to taking this course, mariners should be experienced in coastal navigation and be familiar with navigational computer operations. Mariners will benefit from prior experience in collision avoidance on ARPA and Radar (strongly recommended), Ship Handling, Bridge Resource Management are helpful as well.
Basic Syllabus:
Use, Installation and Correction of Electronic Charts
Validity of Sensor Data (including radar overlay)
Potential Errors of Interpretation
Selecting Operation Settings and Alarms for Route Monitoring
Navigational Calculations
Route Planning and Scheduling
Accessing Ship’s Log and Data Playback Functions
ARPA, AIS and Trial Maneuver Functions
Any applicant who has successfully completed the Electronic Chart Display Information System (ECDIS) MPT #601 course will satisfy the ECDIS training requirements of 46 CFR 11.305(a)(3)(vii) and (b)(2); 46 CFR 11.307(a)(3)(vii) and (b)(2);46 CFR 11.309(a)(4)(xvi) and (c)(2); 46 CFR 11.311(a)(3)(vii) and (b)(2); 46 CFR 11.313(a)(3)(vii) and (b)(2); 46 CFR 11.315(a)(3)(iv) and (b)(2); 46 CFR 11.317(a)(3)(5) and (b)(2); 46 CFR 11.319(a)(4)(x) and (b)(2); and 46 CFR 11.321(a)(3)(5) and (b)(2); AND; be considered to have successfully demonstrated the competencies "Use of ECDIS to maintain the safety of navigation" of Table A-II/1; "Maintain the safety of navigation through the use of ECDIS and associated navigation systems to assist command decision making" of Table A-II/2; and "Plan and conduct a coastal passage and determine position" of Table A-II/3 of the STCW Code as amended.
The Electronic Chart Display and Information Systems (ECDIS) course is also a required part of the Advanced Navigation requirement for the Chief Mate/Master license. This USCG approved ECDIS course, when combined with successful completion of the MPT Voyage Planning Electronic Navigation (VPEN) course results in satisfying all of the assessments required for Advanced Navigation.
