HELM (Operational & Management Level) MCA (UK) approved & MCRM (Maritime Crew Resource Management - OAA)
The Leadership and Management requirement came into force on 1 January 2012, meeting the requirements of the Manila Amendments of STCW pertaining to Leadership & Management training.
We are accredited by Oxford Aviation Academy, UK (OAA) for the leadership and management content.
Oxford Aviation Academy’s (OAA) “Maritime Crew Resource Management” (MCRM) learning programme is certified by against the STCW Manila 2010 amendments mandating Leadership and Management training for ship’s crew.
Both MCRM and HELM (the Operational and Management levels) deal with the psychology and interpersonal skills required by crew to operate safely on board vessels.
The backbone of MCRM and HELM classroom training is its interactive CBT programme devised and regularly upgraded by OAA.
MCRM and HELM are the application of team management concepts in response to dealing with the issue of Human Error. MCRM and HELM motivate the Bridge and Engine room teams to adapt to good resource management practices in day-to-day operations.
This includes understanding the importance of good leadership, effective communication and use of common terminology. Independent behavioural analysis has proven that the training program delivers significant improvements in crew attitude and behaviour to safety.
The learning programme is taught within a team based environment through a mix of lecturing, classroom presentations, facilitated group discussions, and real accident case study analysis. The course is supplemented by interactive learning courseware in order to obtain variation and standardisation during the learning process.
MCRM and HELM motivate the bridge and engine room team to adapt behaviour to good resource management practices during everyday operations. This includes understanding the importance of good management, team work and the willingness to change behaviour. The use of common terminology is also emphasized. It influences new decision making orientation - How we make decisions and how to improve decision quality.
