Course Structure
The Coastal Skipper shorebased course is an advanced theory course in navigation and meteorology for candidates looking to go on and gain their Coastal Skipper and Yachtmaster Offshore Practical Certificates.
The syllabus makes some provision for the revision of subjects in the elementary Day Skipper course but those who have not acquired the knowledge set out in the elementary course are unlikely to be able to assimilate all the subjects covered in the advanced course in the time available.
Useful Information
The course is intended as an integral part of the overall training for the more advanced practical courses and consists of lectures, homework exercises and a 3 part final examination. After successful completion of both the coursework and the examination a Shorebased Course RYA/DoT COASTAL SKIPPER AND YACHTMASTER OFFSHORE Certificate is awarded. It must be emphasised that this is a combined RYA/DoT certificate which is considered suitable for commercial endorsement and the examination standard is high.
(Before claiming to be a Coastal Skipper, the associated practical course and external examination must be completed successfully. The Yachtmaster Offshore certificate is issued only after fulfilling the necessary criteria of time on the water and successfully passing a practical examination with an external examiner).
