RYA Day Skipper Theory

RYA “DAY SKIPPER”

The RYA Day Skipper course is suitable for the complete beginner, and assumes no prior knowledge, although some practical experience of sailing yachts or motorboats is desirable.

You will be taught basic seamanship and introduced to navigation and meteorology, giving you knowledge of all the theory required for skippering a yacht in familiar waters by day, including:

- basic seamanship, understanding the jargon

- using nautical charts and plotting a position

- understanding the tides; calculating tidal heights and streams

- using the Global Positioning System (GPS) and understanding its operation

- pilotage and passage planning

- yacht safety and dealing with emergencies

- how to obtain and use weather forecasts

- the International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea (the Rules of the Road)
