The pre-entry assessment is used to confirm candidates can sail in a controlled and confident manner, showing consideration for preparation, communication, approach and execution at all times.
During the pre-entry assessment candidates may be asked to:
· Sail around a triangular course of 100m (minimum) legs using all the boat's normal equipment
· Sail a tight circular course around a stationary boat
· Sail a ‘follow my leader’ course behind another boat
· Pick up a man overboard dummy
· Sail without a rudder, or with the tiller on a loose elastic around a triangular course (if appropriate)
· Lee shore landing and departure (if appropriate)
· Anchor or pick up a mooring – wind against tide (if appropriate)
· Come along-side a moored boat – wind against tide (if appropriate)
The pre-entry assessment will take place in advance of the remainder of the course. Please see the below published dates.
The four day training course will educate candidates on teaching techniques afloat and ashore and will be delivered by RYA assessors.
Moderation will usually take place on the final day of the course and candidates will be required to demonstrate competence in course preparation, delivery and management, as well as customer liaison.
