The Seamanship course at WHSC is for more experienced sailors who have already achieved RYA Level 2 and have sailed for one year and/or been racing during the winter season.
It covers launching and recovering the boat in different circumstances, stopping, reducing sail, recovering a man overboard & anchoring.
Course aim: Able to handle a wide range of situations afloat
•rudderless sailing (very helpful if you lose your rudder while racing)
•reefing afloat
•anchoring (essential if you intend to do sea sailing)
•3-point turns
•Heave-to
•Stopping/starting
•Coming into/leaving leeward shores
•Being towed
•Man overboard
•Centreboardless sailing
•Picking up a buoy
•Sailing under jib alone
The course is essentially practical and while we cover the theory, it is all about practising and refining skills which is why there is a gap between dates.
