The RYA Short Range Certificate (VHF) Marine Radio course, is a legal requirement for anyone wanting to operating a marine VHF radio set. It is highly recommended for anyone going to sea, whether you have a Motor cruiser, Speed boat, RIB ,Sea Kayak or just go out occasionally on friends boats, the ability to make an effective emergency call is essential. We offer both a 1 day classroom course or an online version that teaches you all aspects of a VHF / DSC set, both options are followed by a short assessment with an RYA examiner.
Course Structure
We have a mixture of ICOM fixed and handheld training sets for you to practice upon during your course and provide you with the VHF handbook to accompany your learning. During your classroom session we will cover the following to fully prepare you for the short assessment:
Radio equipment – handhelds and fixed sets, aerials and power sources
Licensing your equipment
Making and receiving calls
Choosing the correct channels
Using procedural words – ‘prowords’
Using the DSC part of the radio including distress and routine calls
The use of other means of issuing distress such as EPIRBs and SARTs

There are no prerequisites to attend this course, we will run the course with a minimum of 2 people and can usually arrange courses with a few days notice.
