The Manila Amendments to the STCW Convention (STCW 2010) bring a raft of changes along. One of the most significant amendments is the requirements for all seafarers to update some elements of the mandatory STCW safety training.
From 1 January 2017: "If you are serving on board ship and are qualified in any of the following you must as of the 1 January 2017 have documentary evidence of either completing the training course or updating training within the last 5 years"
Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting; Advanced Fire Fighting; Personal Survival Techniques; Proficiency in Survival Craft and Rescue Boats (other than Fast Rescue Boats); and Proficiency in Fast Rescue Boats.
Course Structure
This 2½ day course is designed for holders of an AMSA issued Certificate of Safety Training to refresh their certification and meets the mandatory Sea Survival and Fire Fighting continued competency requirements for current Seafarers with qualifying sea service.
An AMSA issued Certificate of Safety Training (CoST) is the mandatory minimum requirement in order to serve on board vessels in international waters. It is not possible to gain employment in the industry without this Certificate. Port state control may require documentary evidence of having maintained the required standard of competence.

Day 2: Fire-fighting venue for full day practical training (Newcastle)
Day 3 (½ day): Pool practical (in Mascot) and exam.
