A new role has opened for an experienced butler to join a private household based in Guernsey, Channel Islands, overseeing a stunning 4-bedroom, 5-bathroom residence located on a cliff with expansive sea views and substantial grounds. The role extends beyond the main property to include overseeing apartments and houses in Guernsey, as well as properties in Oxford and Austria, requiring occasional travel. The ideal candidate will demonstrate impeccable attention to detail and flexibility in accommodating the principal’s needs.
Key responsibilities:
The butler will be responsible for ensuring that each residence is maintained in a consistent and organised state, from the arrangement of bathroom items, kitchen equipment, and sets of clothes, to the stationery available in each office and practical kits like cables. The principal places great emphasis on having similar setups in all locations and maintaining this consistency will be a critical part of the role.
In addition to maintaining internal order, the candidate will manage external tradespeople such as plumbers, decorators, and electricians. Responsibilities will include defining the scope of work, making initial inquiries, meeting the tradespeople at the properties, overseeing their work, and ensuring that all tasks are completed to the highest standards.
Other duties:
Include running errands, managing wardrobes with proficiency in packing and unpacking, providing practical assistance around the property (including basic DIY tasks), overseeing inventory management, and preparing simple meals. Administrative responsibilities such as record-keeping, purchasing, and coordinating schedules will also be integral, alongside table setting and diary management. The role will further require organising travel arrangements and performing chauffeuring duties, so a confident driver is essential.
Candidates should have prior experience in a similar role, with the ability to manage diverse responsibilities within a private household setting. Strong communication skills are essential for liaising effectively with the principal and other staff members. Fluency in German would be a bonus.
The position offers 40 hours per week, with 24 days of paid leave annually, in addition to Guernsey public holidays. Accommodation will be provided within the main house or an ancillary property. Salary is negotiable based on experience.
