Aim
Practical training course required by all deck ratings wishing to progress to the rank of able bodied seaman. It is also a mandatory requirement for the issue of an Officer of the Watch Certificate of Competency
Entry requirements
Candidates must have 6 months seagoing service in a deck capacity, valid medical certificate, the four basic STCW 95 certificates (Firefighting, First Aid, PST,PSSR) and a Watch Keeping / Steering Certificate.
Outcome
Practical seamanship, shipboard operations and safety procedures, knots bends and hitches, splicing of rope and wire.
Assessment
The course is assessed at the end of the final day.
Course content
Duration of course is 5 days, (typically 4 days training, exam on the 5th day)
Within the course the following practical and theoretical areas are dealt with;
" General practical seamanship duties
" Handling and Splicing of wire and rope
" Anchoring and Mooring
" Cargo hatches
" Rigging gangway, pilot ladder, Bosun chair
" Enclosed spaces
" Understanding of Code of Safe Working Practice.
Course delivery
Using a combination of practical bench work, interactive activities, and multimedia.
Candidates are asked to bring proof of identity and sea time at the start of the course.
