Electronic Chart Display (ECDIS)

The course will cover all aspects of the operational use of the ECDIS, providing knowledge, skill and understanding of ECDIS and electronic charts to the thorough extent needed to safely navigate vessels whose primary means of navigation is ECDIS. The course will be conducted using six Part Task Bridge Simulators with a 120 degree view built to DNV class B standards fitted with type approved equipment SAM Electronics bridge equipment NACOS (Navigation and Command System).

The following subjects will be covered:

•Generic principles of ECDIS.

•Safe and Efficient use of ECDIS for the navigational watch and the potential errors of the displayed data.

•Appreciation of the navigational functions of ECDIS.

•Correctly select and assess all relevant ECDIS information and the error of interpretation.

•Practical implementation of the best practice for the operation of the ECDIS and the NACOS.

•Generic use of AIS including 2008 revised radar navigation display performance standards.
