This course is about prioritizing tasks, managing high workload and manage the resources available in abnormal and emergency situations. The course will give all Chief Engineers and officers the education and training in the human element leadership and management at management level meeting the Knowledge, Understanding and Proficiency (KUP) requirements set out in the following:
•Table A-III/2 (Chief Engineers and Second Engineer officers on ships powered by main propulsion of 3000kW propulsion power or more)
•Function: Controlling the operation of the ship and care for persons onboard at management level
•Competence Use of leadership and management skills
•Function: Maintenance and repair at the management level
•Competence Detect and identify the cause of machinery malfunctions and correct faults
•Competence Handle Emergency Situations
The other aim is to provide procedural training applying Company Engine Procedures in Abnormal and Emergency Situations), by doing so the trainee can apply the (KUP) in a contextual environment.
CSMART will not deliver this course to a shipping company that does not have engine procedures making it possible for the trainee to effectively apply the (KUP) requirements described above.

The course is designated for all Engine officers. Before entering this course the trainee should have:
•Studied the pre reading material for the course
•Successfully completed the pre reading questions
•Attended a ERM 1 course or equivalent
