RYA Competent Crew

Whether you are new to yachting or have a bit more experience and are looking for certification, the RYA Competent Crew course could well be the training you need. The 'comp crew' offers a general, gentle introduction to sailing and teaches basic boat handling, seamanship, helming and safety skills. This is, essentially, a beginner level course which prepares candidates for becoming active crew members rather than just passengers.

There is no formal assessment or exam for the RYA Competent Crew course. While our 5 day sailing course will equip students with all the necessary safety skills and build confidence in crewing techniques, it is also largely about having fun.

Course Structure

The RYA Competent Crew course will equip students with basic seamanship and helming skills. By the end of the course you should be able to steer, handle sails, keep a lookout, row the dinghy and assist in all the general day to day routines aboard a yacht. This course encompasses and expands upon skills taught in the two day RYA Start Yachting course (although completing this course before Competent Crew is not necessary).

For the five training days (across whichever format is selected), students will live aboard one of our training yachts. All meals will be taken onboard (except one evening meal to be taken ashore, which is not included in the package).

Competent Crew sail training with Stormforce Coaching is a practical, hands on, enjoyable and social introduction to yacht sailing.

Useful Information

There are no pre-requisites for this course; the RYA Competent Crew course is suitable for complete beginners and those with some crewing experience alike.
