This course is an introduction to the theoretical skills needed to skipper a small craft. It provides Basic Seamanship and an introduction to Navigation and Meteorology. It is often the first course in the RYA National Cruising Scheme that people attempt.
Course Structure
Seamanship: nautical terms, ropework, anchorwork, safety, preventing collisions at sea, avoiding pollution.
Meteorology: shipping forecast terms, sources of information, basic knowledge of pressure systems, using meteorology in passage planning.
Navigation: chartwork, including use of electronic charts, position fixing, tides, aids to navigation, pilotage, passage planning
