RYA Essential Navigation & Seamanship

This is the introductory RYA Shorebased course and is designed for those with little or no experience. As can be seen from the RYA syllabus below, it is an introduction to Chartwork, Tide, Weather, Anchoring, Rules of the road (our own Highway Code!), Using a GPS and, most important, Safety.

This course is for those who are interested in studying further but don’t want to commit to a Day Skipper course at this stage or those who want some background knowledge before taking the Competent Crew practical course.

Useful Information

Although we are a Shorebased Training Centre – so we won’t take you to sea - we have found it beneficial to show students with little or no experience round our Yacht ‘Windswept’ based in Lymington Yacht Haven on the Saturday before a course starts. Subject to weather and wind, we show you the Safety Gear, Instruments and demonstrate what all ‘the bits of string’ are for.
