This one-day course provides the operators of small boats with an understanding of radar as an aid to navigation and collision avoidance. The course covers radar equipment, its uses and its limitations.

The International Regulations for the Prevention of Collisions at Sea state that if you have a radar on your boat you must know how to use it.

Course Structure

Topics covered during this course include:

?Switching on and setting up the radar

?Understanding the picture on the radar display

?Refining the picture

?Radar reflectors

?Fixing position by radar

?How to prepare a simple pilotage plan including use of clearing ranges

?Using radar to determine the risks of collision with another vessel

?CPA, course and speed

?Automatic radar plotting aids

?The implications of the International Regulations for the Prevention of Collisions at Sea in restricted visibility.

Useful Information

Some knowledge of navigation and the regulations for the prevention of collisions at sea would be an advantage, but is not essential.
