RYA Start Yachting

This course is designed for those completely new to sailing, so if you've always watched from afar and want to have a go at yachting, this really is the place to start. The RYA Start Yachting course is a shorter introduction to yachting than its' sister course, Competent Crew, taking place over the course of a weekend. The training is a good opportunity to try yachting for the first time and have a go at various aspects of crewing and sailing in a safe, relaxed and fun environment under the guidance of an experienced instructor.

Course Structure

The RYA Start Yachting course provides a short introduction to yachting for those who wish to learn to sail and is the perfect opportunity to try sailing for the first time. By the end of the course you will no longer be a sailing novice, having gained experienced of steering a yacht, sail handling, rope work and awareness of safety issues onboard. The Start Yachting course with Stormforce Coaching is run from our training centre in Southampton and is a fun and relaxed introduction to sailing for beginners.

Students who complete the RYA Start Yachting course can proceed to complete the RYA Competent Crew course in a shorter period of time. This course can effectively be used as the first 2 or 3 days of the Competent Crew course, meaning you can later attend a further 2 or 3 day course to attain the full 5 day RYA Competent Crew Certificate.

Useful Information

There are no pre-requisites for this course, it is suitable for absolute beginners, with no sailing experience.
