You may attend a classroom based course, but prior to this you will be sent a course pack which will require about 3 hours pre course study. The classroom based course will allow you to use real simulator radios which will allow you to practice sending distress signals, voice messages and alerts, which will also include the MAYDAY distress signal. After you have completed this you will now be required to take an assessment exam which will consist of a short question paper and also be able to show practical use of the radio. This has to be conducted by a separate assessors from your instructor and should take between 30 and 50 minutes. If possible we will try and arrange this the same day.
The RYA now have an interactive site which allows you to complete several courses on line in your own environment. One of these options is the VHF/ GMDSS marine radio course where you will be able access an on-screen version of radio equipment. As above, you will be sent a student pack which will assist you to complete the course. Upon successful completion of the course you will be able to print off a certificate. You will now have to attend the centre and take part in the assessment exam as in option 1.
Your licence application will need to be completed along with a passport size photo and payment of £60 by cheque or card made payable to the RYA. This is their charge for the licence fee. The application forms will be endorsed by the assessor and forwarded to the RYA who will issue the licence.
