MCA Large Yacht Helideck Procedures & Emergency Response

This course is one of 4 courses which make up the MCA's Large Yacht Helideck Safety Training Syllabus for helideck crews onboard large commercial yachts, including Helicopter Landing Officers (HLOs) and Helideck Assistants (HDAs). It lays the foundations for the other MCA helideck courses and is required by all helideck crew members onboard large commercial yachts, in order to meet the MCA's requirements to perform their helideck duties.

The aim of this MCA-accredited course is to give delegates a basic understanding of what is required to operate helicopters at sea, safety. The course gives an awareness of the hazards associated with working in the vicinity of helicopters and on yacht helidecks and will effectively train delegates to become Helideck Assistants (HDAs) on aviation-capable large yachts. HDAs perform a variety of roles onboard, including conducting helideck preparations for flying, assisting guests during helicopter transfers and acting as Rescue Firefighters during helicopter emergencies.

Trainees must have completed the following elements of STCW 95 Basic Training, prior to attending this module:

- Personal Survival Technique

- Fire Prevention & Fire Fighting

- Elementary First Aid

- Personal Safety & Social Responsibilities

The practical sessions utilise our bespoke helicopter Ground Training System (GTS) to add realism to the training, for courses run at our UK site. If the training is delivered onboard a client's yacht, this will include practical training using the yacht's helideck equipment, wherever possible.

We are able to deliver this course either at our UK training site at Daedalus Airfield, near Southampton, or onboard clients' yachts, anywhere, worldwide. Please note that course dates listed above are planned for delivery at Daedalus Airfield.
