Course Structure

The RYA Inland Waterways Helmsman Course (IWHC) is aimed at the novice or boating enthusiast wishing to formalise and/or expand their knowledge. This course may also be used to obtain the International Certificate of Competence (ICC) for inland waters through the RYA (a written test on the European regulations (CEVNI) must be taken in addition to the boat handling assessment). The ICC and CEVNI tests are available at our Centre. The IWHC practical course usually involves one or two days training with continuous assessment, with the emphasis on safety and enjoyment. For students with boat handling experience the syllabus can generally be covered within the one day; for those with little or no experience it can take a further day to attain the standard required to enable us to award the certificate.

Training can be run on your boat or on one of our craft (Narrow-boat, River cruiser or Dutch barge)

Useful Information

Course forms the boat handling element of the MCA Boat Master Tier 2 qualifiaction for UK category A and B waters for the UK. Other ancillary courses for this qualification are also available at our centre.

Our classroom is easy to find from both the M4 and M40 by car. Public mainline railway stations are located in nearby Maidenhead or High Wycombe and we are only 35 minutes from London/Heathrow Airport.
