Progression: Required under Standards of Training Certification and Watchkeeping (STCW) for Merchant Navy Seafarers for all new entrants to the Merchant Navy as part of the mandatory Basic Familiarisation Training.

Teaching and Assessment: a combination of theory and practical training for basic first aid and life-saving skills. Continuous assessment by observation and questioning of learning outcomes ending with a cumulative multiple choice questionnaire.

Course content: To give all persons intending to go to sea a basic knowledge of the immediate action to be taken upon encountering an accident or other medical emergency on board ship.

You will study:

• Casualty assessment and resuscitation

• Treatment of bleeding, burns, shock

• Rescue and transportation of casualty

• Improvisation techniques
