Personal Safety and Social Responsibilities (A-VI/1-4)

Progression: Required under Standards of Training Certification and Watchkeeping (STCW) for Merchant Navy Seafarers for all new entrants to the Merchant Navy as part of the mandatory Basic Familiarisation Training.

Teaching and Assessment: classroom-based course forms part of the mandatory basic safety training for crew. A cumulative multiple choice questionnaire.

Course content: basic induction training in safety procedures and accident prevention and familiarises novices with the employment conditions and working environment on board.

Covering the following areas:

• Safe working practices

• Pollution prevention

• Shipboard duties & responsibilities

• Human relationships

• Emergency procedures
