RYA Coastal Skipper/Yachtmaster Offshore Theory

This course is a natural progression from the RYA Day Skipper shorebased course. It is a must for those working towards taking the RYA Coastal Skipper or Yachtmaster Offshore practical exams. It provides a more complex understanding of how to navigate safely on coastal and offshore passages during the day as well as the night.

Minimum age: 16 years

Pre-course experience / requirements: Knowledge of navigation to RYA Day Skipper shorebased level and practical sailing or motorboat experience

Course content:

• Position fixing

• Course shaping and plotting

• Tidal knowledge

• Use of almanacs and admiralty publications

• Electronic position finding equipment taking and interpreting forecasts

• Plotting weather systems

• Weather predictions using a barometer and by observation

• Collision regulations

• Customs and excise regulations for cruising abroad
