This training is intended to meet the requirements set out in the Merchant Shipping and Fishing Vessels (Health and Safety at Work) Regulations 1997 (SI 1997 No. 2962) (the Regulations) and the Code of Safe Working Practice for Merchant Seafarers (CoSWP).
On completion of the training, the trainees will have sufficient knowledge and understanding to enable them to:
•Carry out the role of a ships safety officer;
•Carry out risk assessment and accident reporting;
•Carry out safety audits and inspections;
•Create a safety culture aboard ship through teamwork and raise awareness.
Entry criteria for the course should be a minimum age of 18 years with a minimum of 12 months sea time to ensure underpinning knowledge.
To take up the role of a safety officer on board a ship the Regulations define a safety officer as “a person who has sufficient training and experience or knowledge and qualities, to enable him / her to properly undertake the duty imposed under the relevant provision in the regulations )”.
In addition a safety officer must have:
(i) served at sea in a merchant vessel; and who has in addition a minimum of two years’ consecutive sea service since attaining the age of 18,
(ii) in the case of a safety officer on board a tanker, this shall include at least six months’ service in such a ship?
